The first North East Festival of Architecture was held in 2008 (14-22 June). It was born out of the national architecture festival initiative called Architecture Week, which ended in 2007 when national funding was withdrawn. The Festival has always had a good public following and has made an important contribution to the region and to Northern Architecture’s work in promoting good design in the built environment to the people of the North East. Recognising this, Northern Architecture joined together with local businesses and organisations to continue the Festival in 2008 under its new name, North East Festival of Architecture. While it was on a smaller scale in its first year, focusing on Newcastle and Gateshead, it was a great success and encouragement to continue this festival.

 

 

 

 

NEFA 10...

This year the Festival has returned but this time working with RIBA North East as partners who are coordinating all the submissions for independent events, an important part of this festival. We have adopted a focus around designing out CO2, recognising that architecture and urban design is going to play an essential part in tackling climate change, the problems of rising fuel prices and securing energy for our future. We want to make people aware of how architecture and urban design can help us.
