Events
This year there are a number of unique, one-off, special events which we are proud to be able to present as part of the festival line up but which have defied categorisation! A combination of hands-on activities, entertainment, art, education and much more, these events are not to be missed.

All events are free unless stated otherwise but booking may be necessary.

Play:space. Mapping Newcastle & Gateshead’s skateboard scene

Skateboarders redefine and reinvent the architecture of Newcastle and Gateshead; exploring and shaping the city to create their own place. Forgotten corners turned into playgrounds, brutalist blocks become aerial flyways, while familiar landmarks vanish, irrelevant. An architecture of movement, exploration, action and desire. Experience the pscyhogeography of Tyneside’s skaters as we unveil a map of their cityscape alongside videos, photography and live action

Parts of the exhibition will be shown in the exhibition space at Dance City for the following eight weeks.

Cakebook Flash Mob Picnic

Join the EAT! NewcastleGateshead Festival for a flash mob picnic around a giant model of the twin cities NewcastleGateshead built of cakes. 100 iconic buildings and structures have been chosen and the rights to build each out of cake sold (for a small donation to charity) to teams of professional and amateur cake builders from across the UK and beyond. An online 'Cakebook' community has been created so the teams can trade tips and document their progress. Some of the buildings are still available, so if you'd like to become part of Cakebook please visit the Facebook website or email baker@cakebook.org

The secret 'Flash Mob Picnic' location will
eventually be revealed online so Cakebook
members can bring their cakes,
place them on the map and picnic and party
around the perimeter.

Places in Transition

Transition Towns is a social experiment on a massive scale. Communities are self-organising and responding to the pressures of climate change, taking their future into their own hands and rediscovering their potential. What skills do they need? How can they collaborate with local authorities? In what areas can carbon emissions be reduced and how can communities play a vital role in this?

A team of expert academics and practitioners will give short
presentations answering these questions and more and will be available for questions and an informal chat over a glass of wine on various aspects of sustainable living, as well as how best to handle your own and your community’s transition into a more environmentally connected, vibrant, healthy place.

Thursday 24th
‘If We Build It Will You Buy It?’ EVENT POSTPONED. It will be rescheduled as part of Design Event in the North East, 22 - 31 October.

The way most new houses look in this region has stayed the same for many years now. Normally red brick, detached or semi’s on a large estate: they look like what a child draws when they draw a house.

Elsewhere, housing design is changing. People are living in more stylish, aspirational and generally greener homes. House builders appear reluctant to build such homes in this region, maybe they think we have no sense of style? So we’ve invited 10 housing designers who are designing these new homes, to show us what they’ve got. And we want you to tell them if you’d buy it!

This social evening of short, sharp and quirky presentations will tickle your design taste buds. We want you to vote for the housing design that you’d like to live in and see more of!
