Behaving Badly

Buildings are all about the humans in them. We can design super sustainable homes and buildings, but if we don’t change the way we live in them doesn’t energy efficient design become pointless?

This talk and voting session looks at how people behave in their homes and how humans struggle to change set behaviours even when we know we need to, and should, change them. We’ll also be asking, ‘what
does make us change our attitudes?’ and would like you to give us your thoughts too.

Distinctly Darlington: Form - Based Design Coding for Sustainability

In summer 2009 Darlington Borough Council approved their new design SPD (supplementary planning document) – Distinctly Darlington. Hardwiring sustainability into the planning and design process, this document specifies the requirements to ensure that new development in Darlington reflects it’s distinctive heritage, promotes compact growth, improves movement and incorporates measures to reduce carbon emissions. This talk explains the genesis of this document and its practical application through planning.

PassivHaus In the UK

Rather than relying upon energy intensive technologies to provide services like a comfortable room temperature, cold beer and hot showers a PassivHaus building exploits energy efficiency to deliver the same, if not better, standards of living whilst minimising its impact upon the environment.

For instance, by minimizing heat losses in the winter ordinary domestic activities such as cooking, bathing and using electrical appliances, along with things like sunlight and body heat, can provide much of the heating requirement. Ultimately bills, and carbon emissions, can be reduced by 80-90%.

PassivHaus buildings are well-insulated, airtight(draft proof) and utilize a highly efficient heat-recovery ventilation system so as to deliver comfort in both the summer and the winter. This talk, by architect and Certified PassivHaus Designer Mark Siddall, will consider how the PassivHaus standard can play a role in meeting the UK's carbon emission targets.

Place Identity– Towards a Sustainable Future

Our deep-seated need to identify with place and how we gauge this will be explored in the context of planning and design. Increasingly ‘place identity’ and placemaking is at the centre of sustainable development – promoting resilience, local investment and ownership in a rapidly changing global context. The physical aspects of place identity, for example buildings and spaces, will be looked at in relation to built and natural heritage and economic activity.
Immediately following the talk will be an opportunity to debate the issues in the context of sustainable development and how we can meet the challenge of low carbon living.

Talks are an important part of the North East Festival of Architecture, promoting discussion, debate and conversation amongst different groups of people who may not normally come together; looking at important issues or just to share in the enjoyment of well designed architecture and our built environment. It is also an opportunity to bring interesting people to the region to talk about their different roles in the built environment.
